Step 2 of the campaign wizard decides who receives the email. Send to everyone who is subscribed, or build a group from lists, tags and segments and take some people out. Lists, tags and segments are made under Audience: see Lists, Tags and Segments.
Choose the audience #
- In the card Who gets it, choose Everyone who is subscribed or Choose lists, tags and segments. The first ignores lists, tags and segments.
- For the second option, fill in what you need. They add up, and a person in several of them gets one email.
- Lists: click Add lists… and pick lists.
- Tags: click Add tags… and pick tags. You can create a tag on the spot.
- Segments: tick the segments. The number beside each is how many people it holds.
- Optional: in Leave people out, click Choose who to leave out and pick Exclude lists…, Exclude tags… or segments. Exclusion always wins over inclusion.
- Check Who gets it right now. The count updates about half a second after your last change.
- Click Continue to content.

For lists, only people subscribed on that list count. Each field takes up to 100 items. A deleted list, tag or segment matches nobody, and the checklist warns you.
Read the live count #
A number such as "1,240 contacts" is who will get the email. "Nobody is in this audience." means nobody matches. An orange line such as "40 in this audience will be skipped: 3 unsubscribed, 1 bounced." lists people who match but cannot receive marketing email:
| Reason | Meaning |
|---|---|
| not confirmed yet | Status Pending: double opt-in not confirmed. |
| unsubscribed | Status Unsubscribed. |
| transactional only | Status Transactional: service emails only. |
| bounced | The address bounced. |
| complained | They marked an email as spam. |
| on the suppression list | The address is blocked. See Bounces, complaints and the suppression list. |
Contacts in the trash are not counted. See Contact statuses.
Warning: The count is a preview. The recipient list is made when sending starts, and each person is checked again just before their email leaves. For a scheduled campaign, people you add to a list after scheduling get the email too, and someone who unsubscribes meanwhile is skipped.
